The Elaphiti Islands from Dubrovnik: A Slow Three-Day Sail
A short, gentle sailing loop from Dubrovnik through the car-free Elaphiti islands — Šipan, Lopud and Koločep — plus the sandy beach of Šunj and a taste of Mljet.
Not everyone has a full week, and not everyone wants to cover distance. The Elaphiti islands, strung just north-west of Dubrovnik, are made for a short, slow sail — three car-free islands of olive groves, Renaissance villas and quiet harbours, all within an easy hop of the walled city. It is the gentlest way to sample Dalmatian island sailing.
Day 1 — Dubrovnik to Šipan
Walk Dubrovnik's medieval walls early, then sail the short passage to Šipan — the largest and greenest Elaphiti, with two sleepy harbours and olive groves running down to the water. A calm first night.
Day 2 — Lopud and Šunj beach
Car-free Lopud has one of the Adriatic's rare sandy beaches at Šunj — shallow, warm and perfect for a long swim-and-lunch stop. The palm-lined waterfront is lovely in the evening.
Day 3 — Koločep, then back
Koločep (Kalamota), the nearest island to the city, has blue caves along its cliffs and total quiet a short hop from the buzz. A final swim before returning to Dubrovnik — or, with more time, push on to Mljet's forested national-park lakes.
Practical notes
- A gentle option. Short distances, sheltered water and no need to rush — ideal for a first charter or a relaxed few days. See the best time to sail Croatia.
- Extend it. The Elaphiti pair naturally with Mljet and the longer run up to Korčula and Split. See Split to Dubrovnik.
